This looong entry is all about Estee Lauder Model Search 2009 so read it at own risk but don’t worry, I’m not gonna sulk and complain and yada-yada over my failure to even qualify as a finalist in ELMS 2009. Just gonna relate my experience during the roadshow on the 30th of May 2009 in Queensbay Mall, Penang (The roadshow was held from 28th to 31st of May)
Despite me being in the midst of my final examination, I was ‘dragged’ to Penang to join this model contest. I seriously had zero confidence in such stuff. Reached QB Mall at about noon. Got my makeup done by a really professional Estee Lauder make up artist. Man, she’s good.
Moving on to hair and wardrobe. My stylist was so-so. And the person in charge of the wardrobe was such a pain in the ass. The girls before me were only allowed to take only one dress into the changing room and that’s it. Cannot try 2 or 3 dresses wan. But I insisted on taking 2 dresses into the room.
Then it was time for photoshoots. There were 2 cameramen – Guy A and guy B. After about 3-4 shots, guy A asked if I did modeling before and I said no. At that time I kinda felt he was a lil biased ady cos my photo-shoot seemed extra long. But that’s a good kinda biasness, for me =P
When the photos were uploaded, guy B took over guy A and guy A went to the computer TO HELP ME PICK THE BEST PHOTO! You know, it’s definitely alright if he let me screen all the photos first before picking for me. And I thought I’m supposed to pick, not him. But he went on and on in Canto, telling the computer girl which to shortlist and all and in d end he picked the winning photo and waa-lah, the computer girl hit the ‘Print’ tab. See pic here.
Everything happened so fast I was stunned. But since the photo he picked looked good (at that time) I just shut up. Guy A went back to the photo-shoot set. The printing was still in progress so I asked the computer girl if I can browse thru my photos.
Then, guess what? I saw this photo.
And I was like. EH THIS PHOTO BETTER LAH! I instantly asked the computer girl to print and pick that to be the chosen photo for the contest. But it was all too late. The first picture was already halfway out of the printer.
I turned the whole thing around, blaming it on guy A for being such a busybody. Guy A then explained that the first photo has some angle to it which is more suitable to be a model photo and that photographers know how to appreciate such photo. I was convinced at that time. Not convinced also can’t do anything ady lah since the first photo was printed liao.
Days later, I found out I was one of the 8 Penang girls who made it to semi-finals. After getting feedbacks from a few friends, most of them pointed that the angle is a lil cacated. And I was like, it’s okay. We’re random, normal, non-photographer people so maybe we don’t know how to appreciate it. Then it hit me. To make it to finals, semi-finalists will be judged 50% on public votes, 50% from judges.
I realized the photo will not attract random public votes and so I asked my family, friends and relatives to vote for me and I was counting on the judges as well, hoping they could see what guy A saw in that photo.
But sad to say, I didn’t make it to the finals. I was told it was based purely on public votes T_T
Now that I saw the outcome of the 2nd photo (I just got it), which I would have chosen if the busybody photographer didn’t poke his nose into my business, I wondered if that photo could get me further into the competition.
But dad said he still prefers the 1st photo cause it’s elegant. What say you?
P/S: The photo uploaded here is the original copy. The first photo is scanned so the colours, contrast and all are a bit cacat.
