Received my staff ID card after working for about a month.
Btw, since many asked, yes I'm working. At iCIMB. It's not a bank and I'm not doing a banking job so my degree isn't going to waste. Erm. Even if it is, it is not as bad as working in a bank. Who knows, PETRONAS might want me and I'll end up doing something technical (hopefully) though irrelevant to my specialization.
Gonna bug PETRONAS ppl to know my status employment status (recommended/not recommended) end of this week. Don't ask if I want to be bonded or not cause I don't really know. Got plus points and negative points on each side. I know! Let's weigh them!
PETRONAS
(-ve)
- Bonded for 10 loooong years. Can't cabut whenever I want to.
- Don't know which department and location they will throw me to (I wanna stay in KL!)
- 100% will be doing sth irrelevant to my specialization, even though it's technical
(+ve)
- Monthly salary damn high
- Bonuses too!
- Less stressful (and longer unofficial lunch breaks)
- Get to surf to just ANY websites (apart from those xxx ones lah) during working hours
- IF I'm not mistaken, they do not have any history of retrenchment
- It's a freaking huge oil & gas company. What more can you ask for?
- If i get released by PETRONAS, other companies might wonder what's wrong with me till PETRONAS dump me so it's better to get recommended by them
iCIMB
(-ve)
- Salary a few hundreds lower as compared to PETRONAS (although it's not THAT bad, considering I do not have a degree in this field)
- Degree might go to waste cause it's totally, completely and 100%-ly out of my field of expertise. Ahem.
- The system here quite inefficient. 1 month to get staff ID card. Till now no internet access (even if got, most sites are blocked. Can't even check email!). Printer settings till now not configured (though the admin said an engineer will come to our aid like..2 weeks ago)
- I have a lady boss. She's strict.
(+ve)
- Might be able to discover a new field apart from EE engineering that I MIGHT like
- This job experience will definitely look good on my resume. Versatile mah
- Get to travel, since I'm handling regional thingy
- 20 days of annual leave. Quite good, if you ask me. Altera offers only 14 days <-- Correct me if I'm wrong
Other companies
(-ve)
- Economy so bad I don't know if I can get a job elsewhere
- Pay might be peanuts
- Retrenchment rate might be high
(+ve)
- Most probably get to surf internet during working hours
- Might end up working in Penang i.e. Altera (save on room rent and dinner)
There're too many unknowns in the 3rd option so it's invalid. But weighing PETRONAS and iCIMB, I think the scale favours PETRONAS. But the bonding issue quite sien lor. 10 years weh -_-" By the time the bond ends I'm ancient ady T_T

petronas cannot surf any websites...limited only not even blogspot.
Choosing your first job is like the first time that you'll meet a junction in your life. Everything before (school, college) is like a highway. PETRONAS might offer you a technical job, but i'm sure that somehow you can relate to it.Banking and Oil & gas are both very competitive industries. having working experience in PETRONAS is not bad too for your CV, as PETRONAS is acknowledged as one of the best well-managed companies in this country. Besides, you can do Marketing (PDB, PETCO, MITCO) in PETRONAS if you want to try something else. Tho, in the end, its up to you to decide, as you've reached your first junction. :)
p/s: being Recommended in SI is not a guarantee of placement, but have faith in your abilities. I'm sure that your hard work and effort will be paid accordingly. Good luck and all the best!
PETRONAS Non-Scholar (I dont have the 9/10 years bond ;p)
Hohoho , good post . I don't think I'll be the right person to comment on this , however , hope you decide on something that you'll enjoy doing.
